The U. S. Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday that it has found an undeclared drug ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra that could cause a black eye or other problems.
The drug was the product of an alleged illegal online marketing campaign for Viagra, an older drug that is commonly prescribed by doctors to treat high blood pressure and chest pain.
FDA warned Thursday that the drug could cause a black eye or other problems in people taking it.
“Viagra was a very safe drug, and it’s safe to use at this time, but we do have a black eye,” said FDA spokeswoman Kate Liang.
She added that the FDA should not approve Viagra until it has found that it could cause problems.
The FDA issued a statement Wednesday saying it was aware of the undeclared ingredient but was unsure of whether it had been detected. The agency declined to specify a specific date for the agency’s notification.
Viagra is sold under the brand name Revatio, but the drug is not approved for use in people with diabetes.
The FDA said it was concerned that the drug could cause a black eye. The agency said it had not received a warning from Viagra’s manufacturer, Pfizer Inc.
“There is currently no FDA-approved medication that can cause a black eye. The FDA does have a black eye that was linked to the drug, but the FDA has not yet identified the underlying cause of the side effects,” FDA said in a statement.
The drug was originally approved in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, but was only approved for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The FDA said the drug had not been approved for use in people with diabetes. That means there’s no FDA-approved medication for treating this condition.
The FDA added that it was concerned about a possible connection between Viagra and heart disease.
The FDA issued a warning about the drug on Thursday, noting that it has not received a response from the manufacturer or to its maker.
“The FDA continues to be concerned about a potential link between Viagra and heart disease,” the FDA said in a statement.
Viagra is one of the medications that is approved to treat erectile dysfunction, and has not been approved by the FDA for that use in people with diabetes.
Liang said that in the U. S., Viagra is approved for the treatment of impotence and is also approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients who have a history of heart disease or diabetes.
Liang added that people with heart problems should exercise caution when they take Viagra, and advised patients not to take the drug if they are taking nitrates, medicines for high blood pressure, or a medicine for certain heart problems.
Viagra has not been approved for use in children, or anyone under the age of 18.
